A kikötő fogalma és egyetemes jelentése az emberiség kulturtörténetének egyik kiemelt jelentőségű és folyton változó eszmei rendszerét rejti. A távozás és érkezés lehetőségét megteremtő, az azt szabályzó és felügyelő rendszer leginkább a földrajzi, gazdasági és kulturális kontextusban értelmezhető és értelmezendő. A fix pont ami kijelöli a határt kint és bent között és kontextust teremt globális összefüggésben. Koordinátát képez, útmutatót és biztonságot ad, titkokat rejt. Talán az egyik leg ellentmondásosabb mégis legvonzóbb emberalkotta és az ember által irányított környezet.
A Portography első terepe Antwerpen. Európa második legnagyobb kikötője, kapu Európa és a világ határán. Ma Antwerpen etnikai értelemben talán Európa legszínesebb, több mint 100 kisebbséget integráló városa. A történelem viszontagságai során a kikötő(rendszer) fennhatósága folyamatosan változott. A tolerancia és szegregáció együttélése itt adottság, sőt evidencia.
A DeFence projektben épülő Portography antwerpeni gyüjtése a modern kor kikötőit és az azokban fellelhető történelmi, földrazi, gazdasági és kulturális jelenségeket és az abban megjelenő saját konfliktusait vizsgálatát szolgálja. A konfliktus ebben az esetben az ellentétek egymásmellettéléséből fakadó állandó absztrakt erőteret jelenti, azt a feszültséget ami legtöbbször néma jelenlétével a kikötőket beborítja.
The term and universal meaning of the port hides one of the most important and always changing concept of the history of human culture. This structure, which creates possibility for departure and arrival, regulates and controls them, can be understood in a geological, economic and cultural context. The port is a fix point marking the border between inside and outside and creating a context in global interrelation. It means coordinates, gives guiding and security, hides secrets. It is maybe the most antinomic, but the most attractive man-made and man-directed environment. The first research location of Portography is Antwerpen: the second biggest port in Europe, the gate between Europe and the world. From the ethnical point of view Antwerpen may be today the most colourful city of Europe integrating more than 100 minorities. The supremacy of the port system has been always changing during the adversities of the history. The coexistence of tolerance and segregation is a given ability here, actually: an evidence. The Portography (growing within the DeFence project) gathers material in Antwerpen in order to serve the research of modern ports and the historical, geographical, economic and cultural phenomena of the ports and the present conflicts as well. The conflicts mean a constant abstract field of force, arising from the coexistence of opposites: the tension which covers the ports with its silent presence.
